What Are the Import Duties in Nigeria? A Breakdown of the Costs

When your shipment arrives in Nigeria, you’ll be required to pay import duties. This is a legal requirement and applies to almost every commercial cargo entering the country.

Here’s what to expect:

🧮 VAT (Value Added Tax)

The standard VAT rate is 7.5% of your item’s CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value.

💸 Other Possible Charges:

  • CISS (Inspection Fee) – 1% of FOB

  • ETLS (ECOWAS Tax) – 0.5%

  • Surcharge – Based on product type

  • Handling fees at port

🧾 Example Calculation:

Let’s say your product + shipping + insurance (CIF) is $5,000:

  • 7.5% VAT = $375

  • Plus: CISS, ETLS, and other charges = around $150–$250 (approx)

Note: Some items attract higher tariffs depending on category.
