Nigeria’s Import Regulations — What You MUST Know Before Shipping

Importing into Nigeria isn’t just about finding a supplier and shipping your goods. To avoid fines, delays, or outright cargo seizure, you need to understand the country’s import regulations.

Here’s a breakdown of the most important rules to follow:

🔐 SONCAP (Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Program)

This is mandatory for many regulated products — like electronics, machinery, and building materials.

You’ll need a:

  • Product Certificate

  • Certificate of Conformity (CoC)
Both issued by agencies like Cotecna.

There are 3 SONCAP options:

  • Unregistered: For one-time importers

  • Registered: For regular importers

  • Licensed: For trusted, high-volume importers

📄 CCVO (Combined Certificate of Value and Origin)

Issued by your supplier and required for customs duty assessment. It shows where the goods are from and their value.

🏦 Form M

Required to begin the importation process. It’s issued via your Nigerian bank and must be approved by the Central Bank.

🛑 Prohibited Products

Check the Nigerian Customs list before shipping. Importing banned items can result in severe penalties.
